Abstract
Lightning potential index (LPI) is introduced and used to predict lightning. The maximum values of this index are highly sensitive to the microphysical schemes available in the WRF model and hence it is difficult to determine the threshold values for this index. One way to improve the prediction of lightning activity is to directly calculate the electric field generated by the charged hydrometeors. Therefore, in the current study, the potential and vertical component of the electric field were calculated using the outputs of the WRF model simulation for a thunderstorm event. Comparison of the mean electric potential (between the earth and the cloud layer at an altitude of 7 km) with LPI showed that LPI underestimates the observed probable lightning regions compared with the electric potential. Also, the vertical component of the electric field was in good agreement with the usual structure of electric charges in a thunderstorm.
