Abstract
Like other collisional zones in the Alpine‐Himalayan system, the Zagros collision area including the colliding margins of the Arabia and Central Iran underwent a long tectono‐magmatic history since at least the Triassic time (e.g., Agard et al., 2011). The present‐day crustal structure of the Zagros collision zone is thus a collection of structures and fabrics (frozen fabrics) inherited from a long geodynamic history along with superimposing new fabrics produced during the progressive deformation and tectonic evolution of the collision zone. We analyze receiver function arrivals that vary harmonically with backazimuth at all available broadband stations in the area. The results show a dominant signal from contrasts in dipping foliation as well as dipping isotropic contrasts from crustal depths. We interpret these receiver function observations as a dipping parallel structural fabric and the strike of folding that is pervasive throughout the region. The strike of these structures and fabrics is parallel to that of nearby fault surface traces
