Abstract
Due to recent advancements in digital rock physics and arising convolutional neural networks (CNN), many researchers tried to make a connection between rock images and their physical parameters and apparent characteristics using deep learning. They used CNN for the aim of classification, segmentation and rock parameters estimation. However, in all of these studies the input images were limited in one specific scale. In this paper, we study capability of these networks against multiscale input images. To this end, multiscale feature maps are extracted using various autoencoder networks and, then, they are used by a conventional neural network to estimate the rock velocities. Our results showed that this makes the network bigger and consequently unknown parameters of the network increase exponentially, leading to a poorer training low accurate estimations. On the contrary, a CNN produces much better results even with low-resolution images.
